We're celebrating our Tenth Anniversary here at the April Blogging from A to Z Challenge.
#AtoZchallenge. The blog hop that made an online community by asking bloggers to spend the month of April using the English alphabet as inspiration for their posts. We're glad you stopped by today.
Embed an Image
I was chatting with Karis, my Operation Awesome teammate, about images in blog posts.
Blog posts with images in them have higher share rates.
But what will the caption be once someone shares just the image? What will show up for users with a web-browser that disables images? What good are the images if someone is blind or visually impaired?
The solution is a simple one. Add the "alt text" code. Either by clicking the image or by editing the HTML code.
Do you share interesting images you find on blog posts?
an echo from me :)

I tend to share the entire article more often than its images.

I always forget to add the alt tags. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteE is for The Emperor's New Groove!
E is for Epcot!
J Lenni,
ReplyDeleteGenerally, when I share images and this month is no exception seeing how I'm featuring my artwork, I try to make the image file bear the same name as my post title. It doesn't always work that way but it's close enough. I will have to include the alternate file name, too. I see the value in doing this now thanks to your share.
Please come join me for my latest A2Z art sketch in my The Little Mermaid series E is for Eric!
I don't know what you mean by sharing images from blog posts. Like meme grab buttons? or blog grab buttons? mmm no.
ReplyDeleteContinuing the 10th anniversary celebration of "In The Eye of The Beholder" ...
ReplyDeleteE is for Erik LeMaƮtre
i'm not really clear about the purpose of the AltText - does it help with Google search rankings for images if you have alt text included with the post image?
ReplyDeleteToday's poem got delayed due to an avoidable appointment.

Nilanjana Bose - The length of a share on Twitter or Pinterest tends to be smaller than the length of a whole blog post. That's what this suggestion is about.

Angie - You're welcome!
Cathy Kennedy - You're welcome. File names don't often show up in shares. Alt tags, more often, will.
Jackie - It may depend on the browser and what options you've enabled/ disabled. But, for example, when I run my mouse over an image, the option to "pin" it shows up. On some blogs, options to share the image on Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter appear. On mobile devices, I have even more sharing options.
mercury - I'm not sure about the Google search rankings. The purposes are 1) to label the image for those who can't see it and 2) to give visitors another way to share a blog post.
I attempt to use photos in my posts to add something visual. A to Z has led me to not check all the images on other devices - Wordpress has a good feature for that. Normally, I do. I have been embedding video links for the first time though - again not checked.
ReplyDeleteShort version. I need to learn the tip. Many thanks.
I use my own photos as much as possible. I do not use wordpress enough

There's always an image with my blog posts. It's most often the book cover of the book being reviewed. If I insert the image using html I always remember the alt tag, but if I use the tool in blogger I sometimes forget.
ReplyDeleteI just started the AtoZ challenge on Friday because I didn't have space on the blog for posts and couldn't think of a way to fit them in. And then I decided I needed to up my Instagram posting so I would do the challenge there and feature books with titles that start with that day's letter.

I know this and I'm still bad about remembering to do it. I need to go back through my A-Z posts and fix them!
