Elizabeth! Go figure . . .
And no, I promise you I am not narcissistic.
Something inspiring is more like it ...
I am surprised of the journey I have taken so far and am hopeful for what lies ahead.
I grew up in a home where the kids bee-lined it to their bedrooms, screaming, "Dad's home, Dad's home--HIDE!" And we meant it. We were scared of him.
As a newly married woman so many years ago, I yearned to reinvent my parenting skills. My relationship with my father now is much different. Better--and we see eye-to-eye (for the most part). The only reason why I bring up my past is because it amazes me how far I've come and that anyone in my position can most definitely lead a happy and productive life.
I coped with such atrocious circumstances through my art and writing. I combined the two very often and came up with graphic novel books that I had lost myself in. Of course they are as cheesy as I'll get out, but through my characters, I learned how to deal with circumstances and even took out some of my aggression on them as I made them endure situations, but I witnessed their growth as well. I had no idea that a few decades down the road I'd become published.
I am glad that I had the strength as a teenager to stick to the thing I loved most and turned it into something dreamers dream of becoming.
If I can do it, so can you. Yes, you can let your light shine no matter your circumstances!

Hey Elizabeth, great post! To work hard at something and overcome the roadblock is a very well-deserved victory. Right now my roadblock to writing my book is my "real" life as a mom. They need me right now, it's their tumultuous teenage years, and I don't want them to remember those years as, "Shut the door! I'm working on my book". My time will come. I'm keeping my eyes on the goal and I WILL get there one day. Thanks for the encouragement.

Great to learn more about you in this post! My biggest obstacle was finding the time to write. As a schoolteacher, I'm normally too drained from 6 hours of sleep and 12 hours at work followed by cooking and cleaning to do much writing. Now that I have changed careers, I have way more time to write, and my lifestyle is way happier and healthier!

Great post! The roadblocks I have right now are in my head...with my writing mostly. Trying to figure out what is up with that and create a plan of action...you've inspired me to kEEp at it!!

ReplyDeleteGreat post! I'll agree with a few other commenters that my roadblock is finding the balance. I don't want my kids to resent my writing, or feel it takes away from them, even if they take away from writing time. They're only young for such a short time...

ReplyDeleteOf all my roadblocks, one of mine is similar to Tracy's which is financial security by being able to make a living doing what I love without having to spend my time doing work that does not offer any type of spiritual, creative or mental fulfillment. My action plan to clear it away is to make more movies, put them up for sale and partner with organizations that can license my films.
Another one of my roadblocks is a feeling of sadness that overcomes me frequently. My action plan to clear that away is to be more productive so I can stay busy and not have to think too much about the things that bring me down. That's all I have for now.

Thanks for sharing your story. It was really great to read your post. I'm glad your relationship with your father improved. It's difficult, but important to keep our relationships with our family members strong.
ReplyDeleteMy sister and I named our favorite tree Elizabeth when we were little. It was. Little pine tree about four feet tall. We would put scarves and jackets on her when it got cold.
ReplyDeleteI loved reading this because I too had an upbringing, I won't go into here ... but I was able to put the past behind me and be something different and better. I had help with some counseling and God. Yes, I believe in God. I am so happy to hear that you have had some amazing successes!

ReplyDeleteLOL I could barely pay attention because of all the Es. LOL I use writing sometimes to help with stuff, too. But that type of writing is different and never sees the light of day.

ReplyDeleteEeks and well done for being one of the few to realise that this being a leap year, one was suppose to incorporate the 'leap alphabet'. Although I informed the amazing hosts of this alphabet challenge that they were supposed to double the usage of the letter 'a' to balance out the leap alphabet on yep April Fool's Day, you, my illustrious friend, have come very close in appreciating what I was trying to um highlight by highlighting the letter 'e'. Well done and thank you.
And our shy, humble and oh so unassuming friend, Lee, one of your congenial hosts, seems to think I'm the official 'Anti-A to Z spokesman.' Can ya believe that?

ReplyDeleteBeing an Elizabeth I had to comment here. I have had some major roadblocks to overcome too! I still have more to climb over, or push over, or kick through. My plan of action is to survey the land, and even if there are giants in it, to possess it. I happen to know that giants do fall. So whatever the roadblock, I am up to the challenge. What's mine is mine.
